Where to Begin Instruction After Assessment

Estimated reading: 1 minute

Where do you begin instruction after completing your assessments? The starting point for instruction will be determined based on your results as well as the grade/Tier of RTI that you teach.

Third Grade

  • Teachers may need to review missed content, including syllable types and missed spelling rules (Comprehensive course).
  • Some students may need phonemic awareness activities to reach mastery of letter/sound correspondence (Phonological Awareness course or Comprehensive course).
  • The IMSE Morpheme Chart guides instruction of morphemes beginning with the most common prefixes and suffixes.

Fourth Grade and Beyond

Assessment will guide your instruction and pace. Teach missed concepts and continue in the sequence.

  • Review known morphemes and mark the Morpheme Chart with known concepts.
  • Use the Morpheme Chart to teach unknown morphemes starting with the most common prefixes and suffixes. Then teach the most common Latin bases followed by some common Greek bases. Then, go back to teach additional prefixes and suffixes. You can move around in the sequence based on the needs of the students.
